Go clover for your lawn

When we bought our home a few years ago, it had a freshly-sodded backyard. It looked perfect. We kept it mowed, but we never used any applications on it. This was not out of any strong convictions, we just never got around to it.

A few years later, we still haven't applied anything to it, and it keeps revitalizing itself. It's now a mix of some of the original lawn, along with some local 'weeds' and some clover.

While some see clover as a weed, it was actually mixed into commercial grass seed in the past and is making a comeback. Clover is eco-friendly, needs little watering and is very resistant to lawn traffic. If you decide to let a little clover into your life, one precaution you might want to take is to cut it before it flowers to minimize bees, especially if you have pets or children that use the lawn.
