EcoVillage at Ithaca

EcoVillage at Ithaca, in upstate New York, has 160 members who eat together, share laundry machines, TVs, cars and babysitters. But according to member Gail Carson, in a feature in Time, EcoVillage is not a commune. It aspires to be a green village, an alternative to our current lifestyles. "We're trying to create an attractive, viable alternative to American life," says Liz Walker, 53, who co-founded EVI in 1991.

EVI consists of 175 acres, including an organic farm. There are 60 homes, all duplexes to save energy and they are privately-owned with a maintenance fee like a condo association. The group estimates its environmental impact to be 40% smaller than a mainstream community of a similar size. The houses aren't cheap and according to the article, many people come for the sense of community as much as for the eco-friendliness. There is a waiting list to get in.
