A "Green Valley" in Wal-Mart's backyard
Two years ago, Wal-Mart set out on a mission to change their reputation by promising to transform themselves into an eco-friendly business and announcing company goals such as creating no waste, using renewable energy and selling more sustainable merchandise.According to an article in The Washington Post, a wave of start-ups in Fayetteville and in the area around Bentonville, Arkansas, has popped up in the hopes of helping Wal-Mart and their suppliers reach this goal. Nearby Fayetteville hopes to become "the center of the sustainability movement" and has even come up with a name for their vision: Green Valley.
Fayetteville seems to be perfectly positioned for this new role. It is a progressive town, home to the University of Arkansas, has a walkable downtown and many local green businesses already. No matter what you think about Wal-Mart's business practices, becoming more green is a good thing, especially when it's on this large of a scale.
