Banning of shark fin soup a positive step
The finning of sharks to make shark fin soup has started to hurt the shark population. The slaughter of sharks for this east Asian delicacy has even been dubbed and "eco-catastrophe" and demand has increased considerably over the past 15 years.
In traditional Chinese medicine, shark fin is seen as an energizer as well as being beneficial to the lungs, kidneys and digestion. In actuality there is little nutrition to the meat; some protein and gelatin but also high amounts of mercury. Blue, hammerhead and silky sharks are the ones most often targeted for their fins.
