The Pope leads Church's first eco-friendly youth rally
He wore green vestments and spoke to a mostly-youth crowd in Loreta, as Italy observed it's annual Save Creation Day. Participants used biodegradable plates for meals, recycled and used flashlights operated by cranks instead of batteries. Even the prayer books for the Mass were printed on recycled paper.
The Vatican has become more and more green , both under Benedict and John Paul, by taking actions such as installing solar cells at the Vatican and hosting conferences to discuss global warming and climate change.
This is a huge step and one that we should applaud. There is no doubt that the Catholic Church is a hugely influential entity in our world and to see the Pope step up and speak out is encouraging.
