Fashion replaces fiberglass: Recycled blue jeans offer home insulation
Converting an existing residence to be more eco-friendly can be an expensive endeavor. There are of course little changes that go a long way but the best time to consider alternative building methods is when starting new construction or making an addition to a home. I am currently adding a second story on to my century-old home and I've been considering an alternative to that itchy, pink, fiberglass insulation and I may have found my answer.
A company called Bonded Logic has created Ultra Touch, an insulating material made out of recycled blue jeans. In fact, 85% of the material is made from post-consumer waste and treated with fire retardant. Another benefit is that there are no chemical irritants or warning labels on the package. Like other cellulose based products, Ultra Touch boasts mildew and pest resistance as well as superior noise reduction. Sounds good to me! No word yet as to whether "designer jeans" insulation is in the works.
